Oscano, Red Wine From Near Lake Trasimeno, Umbria
Today I tried an excellent red wine called Oscano, it’s made close to where I live on the Tuscany Umbria border. I have had other Oscano vintages but this was the first time I’ve tied the 2008. It’s grown on the slopes of Monte Tezio, north of Perugia.
If you like walking and would like to see the area where this wine is grown, you can find a walk on Monte Tezio in my book, Circular Walks on the Tuscany Umbria Border.

Oscano, Colli del Trasimeno DOC, 2008. Produced by Carlo & Marco Carini.
Cost €7.45 from Umbertide Co-op, 14% abv.
There is no information on the back label, but a quick Internet search reveals that this wine is made from a blend of Sangiovese and Ciliegiolo grapes.
On the nose, this wine has a good intensity and persistence for a wine of its price. The aromas are of red fruits, sweet spice and noticeable alcohol. In the mouth it has pleasant cherry flavours, soft tannins and nicely balanced acidity. The high alcohol level is perceptible but does not dominate.
Verdict: A nicely balanced wine, great value for money, I would definitely buy this again.
